Les Remarquables de Martell -
Edition Laurentine Périlhou
Commissioned by Maison Martell
For Les Remarquables de Martell, Laurentine Périlhou created a poetic tribute to nature and to the terroir of cognac. Conceived as a singular, sculptural piece, the work reflects the deep relationship between the earth, craftsmanship, and time.
For this commission, the artist collaborated with two highly specialized artisans—a jeweler and a cabinetmaker—bringing together multiple métiers d’art. The creation of this exclusive piece required over 800 hours of meticulous handwork.
Crafted using solid gold thread, the work narrates the journey of the vine as it draws its energy from deep roots in the soil, rising toward the light to give birth to Martell’s cognac grapes.
Laurentine Périlhou describes her intention:
“My aim was to make the invisible visible… from Earth to Sun, from the roots embedded in the soil to the vine leaves turning toward the light.”
To elevate this unique dame-jeanne created for Martell, Laurentine worked with precious gold thread produced by the last remaining European gold-thread manufactory, based in Lyon.
She transformed this thread into an intricate ornament: roots adorned with tiny gold nuggets wrap around the glass body of the dame-jeanne, rising upward into a bouquet of delicate vine leaves. Hidden within the composition are a discreet bird and a swift, the emblem of Maison Martell.
The piece is further embellished with three synthetic sapphires, echoing Martell’s iconic blue, and a brilliant diamond set in 22-carat gold. The ornament also incorporates 40 cabochons crafted from three-hundred-year-old oak, a symbolic reference to 300 years of savoir-faire and craftsmanship at Maison Martell.
